NAD+ and anti-aging supplements: cutting-edge science or expensive promise?
The promise is seductive: a capsule that slows your cells' aging. NAD+, NMN, resveratrol — names that make headlines and empty wallets. Like any topic where hope runs high, caution here needs to run higher.
What NAD+ is
NAD+ is an essential coenzyme present in all your cells, involved in energy production and cellular repair. NAD+ levels tend to fall with age, and that observation created an exciting hypothesis: if we replenish NAD+, might we slow aging? Hence the precursor supplements, like NMN and NR, which the body can convert into NAD+.
What science really shows
Here honesty is needed: much of the impressive results come from studies in animals and cells. Supplements like NMN and NR can indeed raise NAD+ levels in humans — that's reasonably demonstrated. What is NOT yet proven is that this rise translates into living longer, aging slower or preventing disease in people. The large long-term trials are missing.
The case of resveratrol and company
Resveratrol (from red wine) was once a star and then disappointed in human studies. It's a good reminder: lab enthusiasm is no guarantee of real benefit in your life.
The Lair's sensible stance
- Treat these supplements as experimental, not a proven solution.
- Be suspicious of any marketing that promises to reverse aging — science isn't there.
- The strongest-evidenced 'anti-aging' isn't in a vial: it's strength training, aerobic capacity, sleep, real food and bonds.
- If you want to try something trendy, do it with spare money and low expectations — and talk to a doctor.
Real youth is defended with habits, not hype.
